Many IT consulting firms talk about work-life balance throughout the interview process, then you find yourself in an IT position where you’re traveling to various different client’s sites across the country, feeling the pressure to constantly be “on” and never having the chance to power off your business pager, laptop or smartphone. You may only work “40 hours” on the actual client project, but that’s in addition to your regularly scheduled travel time, endless client meetings and always worrying about their status, 24/7. At the end of the day our IT consultants go home to their families, not an empty hotel room.
So what does work-life balance really mean for you and your IT career? At SWC we promote a healthy work-life balance program which encourages our employees to efficiently complete work in a 40 – 45 hour workweek, while offering flex time and alternate work schedules. Our IT consultants work extremely hard during the week. The office is a fast-paced, busy environment that requires team members to focus, and simultaneously balance multiple projects. However, at the end of the day and on weekends, we encourage our employees to go home and decompress, and to spend quality time with their families and friends. During this time away from the office, we do not want our employees to worry about what’s going on back at the office. At SWC, we believe downtime is critical – it allows employees to go home to refresh, regenerate and then come back to the office energized and ready to work. SWC views this downtime as a true value. Time outside the office environment is not only important for our employees’ personal health, but for the overall health of the company. We are committed to our client’s success and that means a determined effort, but there is no reason that we can’t have fun along the way.
Another important aspect of work-life balance is personal growth. At SWC, we have many employees involved in a number of community-based initiatives, as well as family-related and recreational activities. SWC proudly promotes a family-oriented environment, and this includes supporting employees who may be little league coaches, or their child’s soccer or basketball coach. SWC encourages this important aspect of family life, and never tries to hinder it. By offering our consultants a very adaptable work environment that accommodates these personal and family-related commitments, SWC believes a healthy balance between both work and home can exist. We recognize that our team members have personal lives and responsibilities outside of the work environment, and we continually strive to create a healthy, happy, engaging and fun atmosphere, both inside and outside the office. We have learned that leadership needs to be open to the idea of flexibility. Just because an employee leaves the office before 5:00 pm doesn’t mean the work won’t get done. It just may mean making a few adjustments to accommodate that particular team member. Figure out a solution to potential barriers that come up and move forward. There’s always a way to make it work, and both the company and the consultants will be happier at the end of the day.
