Microsoft SharePoint 2013 and the Modern Office Experience
Microsoft has recently released the preview versions of several key products, including Office 2013 and SharePoint 2013. IT solutions provider, SWC has been hard at work reviewing the new technologies, in order to determine which improvements will provide the most benefit to our clients.
A lot of the changes in SharePoint seem fairly evolutionary – after all, it has been around since 2001 and is now a mature product. While Microsoft has certainly provided many exciting enhancements in SharePoint 2013, one thing seems clear – the platform will continue to provide the same bottom-line business value that it has for some time now. It’s still all about connecting people, information and tools with each other, in order to enhance information worker productivity. That means that the same challenges still exist, and the same fundamental approach to success is required.
The potential for a more revolutionary change comes in to play when you look at the synergy between the ‘next wave’ of products, including Office 2013, Lync 2013, Exchange 2013 and Windows 8. Microsoft calls this the ‘Modern Office Experience’ – a convergence of productivity, mobile, cloud and social capabilities across all kinds of hardware, including desktop, laptop, ultrabook, tablet and phone devices. Other new products like the Microsoft Surface tablet are going to give users the same full-featured Office capabilities as on the desktop. More importantly, it will be fully connected, highly manageable and enterprise-ready!
Microsoft might be poised for a big comeback with the next wave of 2013 products and the ‘Modern Office Experience’. While I love my iPad and iPhone, the concept of running the full Office suite and other Windows applications all on my devices is very exciting. And, since cloud syncing facilitates seamless data and content sharing across devices – all of the time – I will be able to access any application, anytime I want, with better social, communications and search integration than ever before.
