Alain Locke’s Wish Comes True
Each year, the Alain Locke Charter School’s All-Star Choir and Band visit SWC headquarters to perform holiday songs and have lunch with the team. SWC’s partnership with ALCS goes back to 2011 when we partnered to promote initiatives within the school, like starting a Robotics Club, helping with fundraisers, and most recently with a new Coding and Programming Club. The holidays give us an opportunity to spend more one-on-one time with the students, and they get to see what IT engineers and software developers do day-to-day.
Last year, we began a new tradition of visiting the Microsoft Store for an encore performance. About fifty students performed at the Oakbrook Center location for Microsoft staff and customers. They were also able to experience the new Microsoft’s Wish Machine. The Wish Machine was found at some Microsoft Stores during the holiday season, so it was great timing for our visit. The kids were able to record their wish – new musical instruments for the band. The instruments they have been using were quite old, and new instruments would be a huge improvement for the band and give more students the opportunity to join.
Alaine Locke had the opportunity to make a wish on Microsoft’s Wish Machine
A couple weeks later, we got word that Alain Locke’s wish would be granted! Microsoft was awarding the school with $5000 worth of brand new musical instruments along with a check for an additional $5000 for choir uniforms and additional musical instruments. The students excitedly traveled to the Microsoft Store to unveil their brand new instruments and accept their check.
Students returned to the Microsoft Store to have their wish granted
What a great way to start off 2018! A big thank you to our partners at Microsoft for making this happen, and also to the hard-working team at Alaine Locke who make a huge difference in the lives of these students, especially Principal Patrick Love, Dean Vonyell Foster, and all of the teachers who give their all every day. We couldn’t think of a more deserving group of people to have their wish granted!
