Skype for Business is Coming!
Microsoft announced last November that the next version of Lync will be branded Skype for Business. This came as a surprise to many, but isn’t altogether surprising that Microsoft would want to align the two juggernauts. Alone, Skype’s statistics are impressive:
- Over 300 million active and connected users per month
- 2 billion minutes of calls made in one day
- 140 million active Skype users on iOS and Android
- More than 300 billion minutes of video a year
- And Skype calls account for 38% of global international calling minutes
With Microsoft Lync taking the lead in new Unified Communications deployments and Gartner’s positioning of Microsoft as the leader in their 2014 Magic Quadrant, it’s clear that companies are realizing the value and reaping the benefits.
Until recently, we didn’t have a firm release date for Skype for Business other than the first half of 2015. It has now been announced that we can expect both the on-premises and online releases in May (according to Microsoft insiders, but could be as soon as April)! Stay tuned as we will discuss new features, upgrade strategies and introduce you to the client over the coming months and please reach out to SWC or come to one of our upcoming Chicagoland IT events if you have specific questions about Skype for Business or would like to know more!
More Skype for Business details and date announcement information can be found at Microsoft’s site.
