Bob Knott Moderates Cybersecurity Forum at Oak Brook Chamber of Commerce
Bob Knott, President of SWC Technology Partners, an Oak Brook, IL based IT consultancy for mid-market businesses, moderated the Greater Oak Brook Chamber of Commerce Cybersecurity Forum on Monday, May 16, 2016 at Le Meridian Oak Brook Center.
The session, put together by the Chamber’s Banking and Financial Services Committee, addressed the numerous cybersecurity threats companies of all sizes are facing as increased adoption of business enablement technologies provide additional channels for hackers to access sensitive information.
Featuring legislative business and technology leaders, the forum discussed today’s cybersecurity challenges and the most effective methods to help mount a defense. Led by SWC President Bob Knott, the panel included Vince Voci from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Bob Kunimara, Millennium Trust; Larry Wojcik and Bennet Cikoch, Ace Hardware Corporation; and Brad Adams, Graycor.
Bob Knott opened the panel by setting the stage for the current threats in today’s climate:
I can tell you from our experience working with over 350 companies, cybersecurity breaches are happening all the time. It affects companies of all sizes. Especially in the mid-market segment we specialize in, we’re seeing an increase in the frequency and sophistication of the attacks which is really shining a light on the vulnerabilities businesses face today.
Knott addressed the importance of security awareness as a first step:
You need to recognize you’re being targeted, and the hackers are spending more and more time to systematically develop more intelligence about you so they can be successful.
The 90-minute panel approached the topic from both an IT and business perspective. A key theme discussed by the panel was the importance of approaching security programs from the top-down, engaging business leadership to secure critical data. Another key topic was the vulnerability that end users pose to exposing sensitive data, as well as how these security programs often extend beyond traditional IT roles.
When you hear about all the threats, one thing business leaders often say is that it seems like an impossible mission to defend everything, but that’s really not the case. Typically, threats boil down to three things – a perimeter breach, social engineering and insider threats. Beginning to segment your strategies to address the unique challenges of each of these channels will enable you to develop a more comprehensive defense.
