4 Ways That Networking Helps Venture Capital Newbies

Peter Liu, a 26-year-old senior associate at Pritzker Group Venture Capital, moved to Chicago three years ago to pursue a career investing in startups. The former New York City-based banker said he quickly realized that Chicago offered plenty of events for entrepreneurs to meect and learn but none for those new to the venture capital community.
Two summers ago, Liu started VentureUp, a professional network that gathers venture capital newbies every other month for happy hours and fireside chats. Today, the group includes 90 members from 50 venture capital firms across Chicago and the Midwest. Liu said the group also includes some participants from the coasts. All use an email listserv to keep in touch between events, where they share job leads and other information.
VentureUp’s mission “is really to foster the development of junior VCs in Chicago, given that they’re the next generation of Chicago tech and Chicago ventures,” Liu said.
